The hatch 4 schools program has been taking place in Ballycar playschool for almost two weeks now. In the playschool we have got an incubator to keep the eggs warm until they hatch. The incubator was set at 37.5 degrees. After they have hatched and their feathers are dry the chicks are put into a bigger cage which has a heater, food and water. The hatch 4 schools is a local program. It has everything needed to show the pupils the lifecycle of a hen, from egg to chick to hen!
At first we received seven eggs. Four eggs have hatched and three were replaced with two live chicks. On Friday the 3rd the chicks will return to Inagh free range farm to live where they will start to lay eggs themselves at sixteen to nineteen weeks of age. It’s been a lot of fun checking in on the chicks each morning.
