Hatch 4 Schools

31/5/2016

The hatch 4 schools program has been taking place in Ballycar playschool for almost two weeks now. In the playschool we have got an incubator to keep the eggs warm until they hatch. The incubator was set at 37.5 degrees. After they have hatched and their feathers are dry the chicks are put into a bigger cage which has a heater, food and water. The hatch 4 schools is a local program. It has everything needed to show the pupils the lifecycle of a hen, from egg to chick to hen!
At first we received seven eggs. Four eggs have hatched and three were replaced with two live chicks. On Friday the 3rd the chicks will return to Inagh free range farm to live where they will start to lay eggs themselves at sixteen to nineteen weeks of age. It’s been a lot of fun checking in on the chicks each morning.

Healthy Times
Health Promoting SchoolsBallycar National School are hoping to achieve a Health Promoting Schools Flag this year.

Physical Health -
Over the past few weeks the students in Mr Dillon’s classroom have attended FAI 5 a side soccer league with the girls getting to the semi-final.We also participated in the boy’s mini 7’s hurling tournament hammering Scoil Críos Rí, beating Knockaneen and narrowly losing to Doora. We will also be entering Boys Cumann Na mBunscoil in the next few weeks.

For ten minutes every morning the pupils of Ballycar NS have been taking part in a variety of activities in groups outside the back of the school, we included activities such as jumping jacks, high knees, tuck jumps, squats and beanbag throws. Everyone enjoys these activities, as it is a fun and healthy way of starting the school day. We will continue these stations until the end of this term.

Active Homework -
During Active Schools Week not only did we stay active during school, but also after school. As part of homework we did the 20/20 challenge where we did activities such as squats, jumping jacks and tuck-jumps at home.

P.H.M -
Peer Health Mentioning is all about how we will pass on our knowledge of healthy eating and our own health and fitness to all our friends and family. It involves trying to teach everyone that healthy eating is very important and that we all need to keep active, fit and healthy for the years to come.

Wally -
Wally teaches us how to help look after our backs. All the children in Ballycar N.S. are participating in a Schoolbag Weight Experiment. Jack Haverty, James Gordon and Seadhna Liddy are making a Ballycar Weigh-In to measure the weight of our schoolbags making sure they are the right weight for our backs because a heavy bag is not good for a healthy back.

Sports -
As part of Health Promoting Schools Week every child in the school has to do a project on one sport. After popular sports like hurling, soccer and Gaelic football were taken less common sports were picked like BMX biking, freestyle snowboarding and Aussie rules. All the projects will be being displayed in the hall for parents, teachers and fellow students to look at.

Congratulations to the Clare Senior Hurling Team and Mr. Dillon who won the League. The last time they won the league was in 1978, 38 years ago. Clare also won the League in 1946 and the captain was John Daly, Brid-jean and Aine’s Great Grandfather. John however got his brother Haulie to accept the cup as he was also playing in the match. When Davy Fitzgerald was in the school Brid-Jean and Aine took a picture with him and the 1946 League medal.
